Payne Chapel AME Church Historic Landmark
West Palm Beach, FL
HISTORIC
“To restore a building is not to fix it to what it once was, but to reveal what it has always meant.”
The restoration of Payne Chapel A.M.E. was driven by a deep respect for its civic and cultural legacy. Originally designed by pioneering Black architect Hazel A. Augustus in the early 20th century, Payne Chapel has long stood as a cornerstone of faith, resilience, and community identity. Our goal was to honor Augustus’s vision, revitalizing both the structural integrity and spiritual spirit of the landmark while adapting it to contemporary use.
Every step in the renovation was rooted in historical research and community engagement. We meticulously repaired and restored key architectural elements, ensuring the building retained its original character and craftsmanship. At the same time, we subtly integrated modern utilities—enhanced accessibility, updated mechanical systems, and flexible interior spaces—so the chapel could continue to serve a diverse congregation and host social, cultural, and educational events. The result is a harmoniously preserved yet functional heritage icon that breathes new life into Payne Chapel’s ongoing story.
